BRIT Language Centre has been assisting students in university preparation for over ten years. Whether it is IELTS Preparation, official UK university pre-sessional courses, or our own university preparation courses, students can be confident in the quality. 

If a student is looking to skip the IELTS exam and use one of our Pre-sessional courses to meet university language requirements, we recommend taking either our Heriot-Watt Pre-sessional or our Strathclyde Pre-sessional. Course Content

Critical Academic Reading and Research: 

  • Students will search for academic sources, taking relevant, usable notes
  • They will be taught to distinguish between different types of sources and evidence
  • They will practise applying critical thinking to evidence, conclusions and limitations

Academic Writing:

  • Students will understand the necessity for citation: how, why and when to use it
  • They will practise structuring essay introductions, support and conclusions
  • They will learn a variety of academic writing techniques, processes and academic-context-specific applications for relevant vocabulary and grammar 

Seminar Presentation:

  • Students will draft, structure and rehearse their presentation, with reference to visual aids
  • They will practice presenting their research projects in clear, engaging language, with expressive delivery
  • They will lead a full-class discussion of the ideas and issues raised in their research

UK Academic Culture and Community:

  • Activities, work and assignments will be student centred, collaborative and with scope for autonomous learning, reflecting UK academic life and expectations
  • Criticality, varied perspectives and nuanced discussion of ideas and issues will be developed through in-class interactions, assignments and teaching processes
  • Students will leave the class with confidence and enthusiasm to join their chosen academic communities
